The Russian Fort constructed in 1816 is the last of its kind currently preserved as Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park. The Hickam Field, now part of the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam is an old Air Force Base which was one of the primary targets of the Imperial Japanese Navy during the WWII Pacific Campaign.
Other historical sites include the ‘Iolani Palace which is the only royal palace used by a reigning monarch in the US. It was the residence of King Kalākaua until 1893 when the monarchy was overthrown. Captain James Cook who was famous for being the first European to set foot on many Pacific destinations also set foot for the first time in Hawaii in 1778. The Cook Landing Site has since become a historical monument for the state.
Wildlife enthusiasts should head for the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge to spot native Hawaiian seabirds and Nene - the endangered Hawaiian goose, red-footed boobies, Laysan albatrosses, wedge-tailed shearwaters, and other seabirds.
