Smathers Beach Key West Florida

For the purpose of this blog I am going to focus on a great beach in Key West, Florida — Smathers Beach. First of all, Key West is a great place to go if you are not into large crowds. Believe it or not, it is actually less crowded than most of the Florida beaches. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Key West beaches are on the south side of the island.

Not only can you save money by renting a car in Florida, you will likely be able to park your rental car at one of the many free parking lots. Entrance to the beach is also free of charge and offers a variety of amenities: picnic tables, volleyball courts, jet ski rentals and restrooms. There are also many hotels nearby so if you do not live in the area there is an abundance of places to stay.

Smathers Beach is the largest of the Key West beaches as it runs 2 miles along the southern shore (and is located about 1 mile from central Key West). If you are not up for packing a picnic, not to worry as there are many beach vendors selling drinks and food. And if you have children, there is no better place to be! Smathers Beach is known for its shallow waters — you can meander quite far out into the sea without fear of being taken over by waves. There is also no strong current which means no undertow and hence much less fear of drowning. Of course you must watch your children (this goes without saying) however they will experience a lot more freedom than they would at other beaches.

If you are into snorkeling, this is the place for you! Again, because the waters are so calm you can spend hours exploring what this beach has to offer. The beach is lined with coconut trees and its brilliant views and gorgeous sunsets allow for amazing photo opportunities, romantic moments and the creation of memorable experiences for your whole family.
