Driving Regulations in Massachusetts

Seat Belts and Child Restraints
Seat belt use is mandatory for all passenger vehicles, and there is a fine of $25 for any car occupant age 16 and over without a safety belt fastened. The driver is fined an additional $25 for each occupant ages 12-16 not wearing a seat belt. Child Restraints are mandatory for less than 12 years of age. Children must ride in a federally approved child passenger restraint until at least 5 years old and weigh over 40 pounds. There is a $25 fine for disobedience.

Passing on the Right
Passing on the right is permitted on one-way streets, on divided highways and when vehicle ahead is making left turn, provided roadway is free from obstructions and of sufficient width for two or more lanes of moving vehicles.

Drinking and Driving Regulations
The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08. Penalties include a 90 days license suspension, and vehicle confiscation. Having open alcoholic beverage containers in a motor vehicle is prohibited.
