Getting from the airport to town and exploring the city
Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood International Airport is the closest and most widely used as it's just four miles from the edge of town, on Route 595. Taxis offer the easiest way to get into and around the large, sprawling urban area which is almost entirely laid out on a grid system, so even first-timers driving hire cars should find orientation easy. Fort Lauderdale has its own Executive Airport for the businessman or woman in a hurry with access to private aviation. Conversely, some trans-continental flyers find themselves landing 45 minutes away, at Miami International, but should have no trouble finding taxis.
Fort Lauderdale enjoys a tropical climate, with an average year-round temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) and abundant sunshine. The warmest month is August, but also with the heaviest rainfall. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius), with January, the coolest month of the year.

This is America’s holiday zone so people are used to a laid-back approach. A relaxed handshake and first-name terms are the order of the day, although increasing crime in the State has made carrying company accreditation desirable, if you’re there to work.
Tipping advice
Restaurants in Fort Lauderdale usually do not add gratuities to the bill so tipping is usual with a recommended 15 percent expected where customers deem the service to be good. Should the meal and service be excellent then a gratuity of 20 percent would not be exceptional. Tips in taxis should be paid along similar lines. The recommended rate for doormen, parking attendants and valets is one US dollar.
Fort Lauderdale dress code
As Fort Lauderdale is a beach resort, formal dress code is almost non-existent in certain areas of town. Beach and casual holiday apparel is commonly worn in locations close to the sea, while loose, light fabrics are favored by smart dressers in business districts because of the hot, sometimes humid conditions which abound for much of the year.
Local Customs
The Everglades provide Fort Lauderdale with all sorts of interesting, if not wild customs and pastimes. Visitors are not recommended to try their hand at the traditional sport of alligator wrestling, but they are welcome to view non-wrestling reptiles on any one of the numerous wildlife tours available within the region. Swamp buggy and airboat safaris, into otherwise inaccessible areas, provide a truly exciting, white-knuckle way to view the unique secrets of this fascinating watery wilderness.
