The Burning Man is a dynamic and exciting temporary community that exists only once a year, forming the fun-filled and experimental Black Rock City. Taking place from the week prior to Labor Day and through to the weekend, the Burning Man draws together over 25,000 travelers from around the world. Held in the Black Rock Desert, 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada, the Burning Man is a drive-in festival event that allows people to freely depend and share with each other in a totally unique way.

And just so you don’t miss it: “the man,” a giant sculpture of wood, is burnt the Saturday night before Labour Day in an awe-inspiring blaze that can be seen across the whole Black Rock Desert.

Burning Man Themes

The Burning Man community organizers select a theme each year to give inspiration to the travelers that create Black Rock City. Inspiring art, song, and dance, past themes have included Fertility, Time, Hell, Outer Space, The Body, The Floating World and Beyond Belief. 2004’s theme was The Vault Of Heaven, with this year’s theme still being considered.

Getting to the Burning Man

As the Burning Man festival takes place out in the Black Rock Desert, nerely 120 miles north of Reno, Nevada, travellers have to get there on the ground. Due to the difficulties of travelling in the desert, most people choose to drive to the Burning Man festival.

Directions to the Burning Man from Reno, Nevada

  1. From Reno, Nevada, take Hwy I-80 east for approximately 30 miles.
  2. Take the Wadsworth/Pyramid Lake exit #43 to Hwy 447.
  3. Go 1.0 mile to Wadsworth and turn left, staying on Hwy 447 north. It's 75 mls to Empire, NV where gas and supplies are available.
  4. Continue 3.0 miles to Gerlach where gas is also available.
  5. From Gerlach, go northwest on Highway 447 for one mile to the fork. Take the right-hand fork, Hwy 34, and continue 11 miles to the Burning Man entrance.
  6. Note: The 3-mile playa entrance (first turn-off) used in previous years should not be used. The 12-mile playa entrance just beyond ours will not take you to Burning Man and will be patrolled by BLM Rangers.

Ride-sharing to Burning Man

Sharing rides can be a great way to meet people and help foster the spirit of the Burning Man. However, you should be extremly careful in who you let into your vehicle and obey all local laws regarding hitchiking and highway travel. While everyone likes making friends, one of the fundimental goals of the Burning Man is to celebrate and share in safety within local laws.

Once You’re At The Burning Man

For everyone’s enjoyment, here are some helpful hints about your time at the Burning Man.
  • Park Your Car! While you have to drive to get there, Black Rock City is a pedestrian- and bycicle-based community. Vehicles should stay under 5 Mph at all times, and casual driving is strongly discouraged. There is no driving allowed on Sunday night.
  • Respect the public and event boundaries: Boundaries are for your saftey and that of others. Respect them, as there is lots of space for everyone!
  • No Commerical Activity: Absolutley nothing should be bought or sold at the Burning Man, with the exception of a few essential items offered by the organizers. One goal of the Burning Man is to have a festival without commerce.
  • Leave No Trace: Respect the environment so the festival can continue next year.
  • Respect other Campers: Just because you want to get loose, dosent mean other people have to join in. Respect the privacy of each camp, as well as everyone’s right to not be disturbed by sound, light or other factors.

Getting the Most Out of Burning Man

Stay Informed: Important and accurate info about events, schedualing, public safety and other factors can be found through camp resources such as the WhatWhereWhen, Digital Directory at Playa Info & on PlayaNet kiosks, the Black Rock Gazette, and through regular news bulletins on Burning Man Information Radio (94.5 FM).

Watch For Public Phones: Almost all cell-phones will not work in the Black Rock Desert. As the nearest public telephones are at least 12 miles away in the town of Gerlach, be sure to contact people when you get the chance.
No Dogs or Firearms: Dogs and firearms are simply not safe at Burning Man, and will not be allowed into Black Rock City.
Having Fun Carefully: Burning Man Safety
Burning Man is an amazing event, and an outstanding experience. However, it is best to follow certain safety rules to make sure that you and other travellers stay healthy and secure.

  • Follow The Local Laws
  • Observe Publicly Posted Fire Rules
  • Stay Within Event Boundaries
  • Respect the Local Conditions and Weather

Essential Safety Items Suggested by the Burning Man Organizers

  • 1.5 gallons of water per person per day (for drinking, showering, washing, and food preparation.) Keep a bottle of water with you at all times.
  • Enough food/beverages for your entire party.
  • First-aid kit.
  • Warm clothing for evenings--this is a desert at 4000 feet elevation!
  • Bedding and shelter of some type; the winds can exceed 75 mph, and the mid-day temperature can exceed 100º
  • A good camp tent is recommended along with warm sleeping bags. Evening temperatures can be in the 40's.
  • Garbage bags.
  • Any required prescriptions, contact lens supplies (disposables work great), or whatever else you need to maintain your health and comfort in a remote area with no services.
  • Flashlights and spare batteries (headlamps are useful) - to be sure you can see and be seen at night.
  • Sunscreen/sunblock lotion and sunglasses.
  • Fire extinguishers, if you plan to burn your art.
