Driving Regulations in Manitoba
The use of seatbelts and child restraints are mandatory within the province of Manitoba, for all passengers in all seats of the vehicle while in motion. Visitors that are over the age of 16 and carry a valid driver's license are permitted to drive within the province.
Speed limits
The speed limit on all streets in Winnipeg is 50 km/h, unless otherwise posted. Higher speed limits are on streets designed to move traffic from one part of the City to another (e.g., Lagimodiere Boulevard moves north/south traffic on the east side of Winnipeg). These are Regional Streets. However, residential streets move local traffic within communities (e.g.,Meadow Gate on the Kildonan Medows Community in Transcona), and the speed limit are 50 km/h.
Drinking and Driving
Manitoba has very strict laws about drinking and driving; some of the toughest in Canada. Those caught driving a vehicle with a blood alcohol level over .05 blood alcohol level are considered impaired, and will be subject to a three month license suspension, and a 6 hour roadside suspension. In addition, open liquor are not allowed in a vehicle unless stored in the trunk.
