Dublin is full of history, being a city for approximatly a thousand years, most of the history is still available to visit. The best way to understand the history of Dublin is to visit the Dublin Castle and other historic sites. There is so much architecture to see, but here are some of the main historic sites to visit on your tour of the city.

Dublin Castle
Dublin Castle is located in the centre of historic Dublin. The city gets its name from the Black Pool, 'Dubh Linn', which was on the site of the present Castle garden.

Aras an Uachtarain
Aras an Uachtarain is where the President of Ireland calls home.

Hours of Operation:
Áras an Uachtaráin is open Saturdays only. Free admission tickets are issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day.

Malahide Castle
Set on 250 acres of park land in the pretty seaside town of Malahide, Malahide Castle was both a fortress and a private home for nearly 800 years and is an interesting mix of architectural styles. The house is furnished with beautiful period furniture together with an extensive collection of Irish portrait paintings.

Christchurch Cathedral
Christchurch Cathedral is Dublin's oldest building, founded in the year 1030 by Sitrvic, King of the Dublin Norsemen. Christchurch Cathedral has one of Dublin's oldest and most recognised exhibitions "Treasures of Christ Church" which tells 1000 years of history, architecture and worship in Ireland. Christchurch Cathedral hosts a series of concerts, recitals and talks every year.

Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre
Also known as Goat Castle, Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre will take you through a Murder hole, bartizan garderobe, machicolations and battlements. You can explore the folklore, customs and literary history of Dalkey, written by playwright, Hugh Leonard. There are also heritage trails and historical walks in Dalkey every day April to December

Ha'penny Bridge
The Ha'penny Bridge, built in 1816, is Dublin's oldest pedestrian crossing over the River Liffey. The bridge was originally named the Wellington Bridge, but aquired the name due to the halfpenny charge to use the bridge up until 1919.

Saint Patrick's Cathedral
Saint Patrick's Cathedral was founded in 1191. Living Stones,the permanent exhibition, celebrates Saint Patrick's place in the life of the city, its history and its role.

Daily from 9am -6pm except Saturday. (9am-5pm) and Sundays (from Nov-Feb) from 9am-3pm.

The Chimney Viewing Tower
The existing 185 ft old Jameson Distillery Chimney has had a two tiered glass enclosed viewing platform placed on top, which provides a 360 degree panoramic view of Dublin city. Chief O'Neill's bar features live traditional Irish music session and some traditional Irish cuisine.

The Oscar Wilde House
The house is an excellent example of Georgian architecture, where the Wilde family took up residence in 1855 and where Oscar Wilde lived until 1876. American College Dublin took over the house in January 1994 and due to a major restoration project the ground and first floors of the house are now open for guided tours.

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday:
Two tours daily at 10.15am and 11.15am

All funds go towards the ongoing restoration and maintenance of the Oscar Wilde House.
